Vehicle Recovery help needed

posted by OK

Hi,

I was volunteering at the Chimera 100k/100mile race and it was canceled at about 1230pm due to really bad weather.  I spent the rest of the afternoon doing rescues and vehicle recovery.

However, there's one Suburban that I couldn't recover on my own.  It started sliding off the edge of the Main Divide trail between Trabuco Trailhead and Trabuco Peak.  We left it parked there and I brought the owner of the suburban home.  He would be very appreciative if any of us could go up there tomorrow to help him recover his vehicle.  We probably need 3 rigs and winches would be beneficial.

Thanks

Olaf

[SBNF_AAT] Forest Fire Restrictions‏

posted by Scotch

Fire Restrictions
Lowered on the San Bernardino National Forest

San Bernardino, Calif. December 8, 2009 –
Snow and rain across the San Bernardino National Forest has provided
sufficient moisture levels to reduce fire restrictions on the forest effective
today.

Under the reduced fire
restrictions, wood and charcoal fires will once again be allowed in
agency-provided campfire rings at Yellow Post Sites and recreational target
shooting will be permitted at selected sites.

"Fires can happen at any time of the year, and these
relaxed restrictions are due to more favorable weather, but folks must remain
vigilant in using caution while enjoying the forest," said San Bernardino
National Forest Fire Chief Kurt Winchester.

Current fire restriction and guidelines in effect on the
San Bernardino National Forest are as follows:

        Wood and charcoal campfires
are allowed only in developed campgrounds and picnic areas, and Yellow Post
Sites within agency-provided fire rings or designated
stoves.

Campfire permits are required for propane and gas stoves and lanterns
used outside of developed recreation sites.

        Recreational shooting is
limited to designated sites and public shooting ranges operated under special
use permit only, except those engaged in legal hunting.

        An approved spark
arrester is required for any internal combustion engine operated on designated
forest routes. These include chainsaws, generators, motorcycles, and off-highway
vehicles.

Smoking is limited to enclosed vehicles and developed recreation
sites.

Fireworks are always prohibited on the San Bernardino National Forest.
Tracer, armor piercing, steel core, and Teflon ammunitions are also prohibited,
as is discharging a firearm at any exploding target.

Forest visitors are encouraged to Know Before You
Go
and call ahead to the local Ranger Station to check on location
conditions and restrictions.

Need HAM radio 4x4 volunteers needed

posted by OK

Hi,

I was asked to volunteer for the Chimera 100k/100 mile Trail Ultra marathon as communication support through my HAM radio club.  However, they also need operators that have 4x4s to get the volunteers and equipment to each aid station.

The race is this Saturday December 12.  Race details are at http://www.oldgoatrunners.com/old_goat_50_home_page_002.htm

The race starts on Saturday morning  the 12th of dec. it is a combination 100 kilometer and 100 mile trail run in the Santa ana mountains up and around Santiago Peak. Some of the runners will be out on the course for 36 straight hrs. The race director was hoping for 3 twelve hour shifts at 4 aid station locations. 1 shift is only about 8 hours. It's located at the foot of Silverado Trail (about 250 yards inside the gate) on Maple Springs
Truck Trail at the end of Silverado Canyon.   It will be manned from
about 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, It is the 38 mile point in the race and we
expect that the front runners will be there around 10:00 am. Im not sure how many volunteers we have yet. Im still getting e-mails from possible volunteers. Im going to copy more info for you from the race director about locations of the aid stations.

From the race director:

Top of Maple Springs and Bluejay...  After that Silverado (the
>> shortest duration) Trabuco Trail Head (the longest serving), then
>> Santiago and Trabuco Peaks....
>>
>> With the exception of Silverado all of the aid stations will be open
>> for nearly 36 hrs.  That's why we have scheduled three shifts at each
>> station...   In a perfect world there would be at least one HAM at
>> each station each shift.  We will feed and shelter everyone who wants
>> it.   The stations are 10X20 shelters with heaters (small) and grills
>> for cooking lite fair and heating water for coffee etc.
>>
>> We have 4X4 s at each station and a shuttle delivering personnel
>> through the evening...  The shuttle takes about 2 and a half hours
>> each way between Blue Jay and Maple Springs...   There is no
>> predicable transportation from Silverado up to Maple Springs though I
>> know there is going to be a Pizza Run to that location at 8 PM on
>> Saturday.
>>
>> Approxamately 100 runners will run the 62 mile course, and about 60
>> runners will do the 100 Mile race....  I anticipate about 30% of the
>> hundred mile field will drop at Blue Jay.   What this means is after
>> the 100k field passes, the runners will be widely spaced and there may
>> significants lulls between arrivals.  The HAMs will only be HAMs and
>> the volunteers will take care of the runners needs, and those
>> volunteers with HAM licenses 'may' assist if the situation permits.
>>

The Partnership For Johnson

the new map.

In a brief statement, Chairman Harry Baker said that he is
disappointed to see that none of the area to the east of the base was included,
and again, it is the recreation lands and those lands that border the
communities that are targeted.

[Brief Description of new proposed Alternative
6]

Proposed 29 Palms Training Land/Airspace Acquisition
Project
Project Description Paper Number 5 – November 2009
Alternative 6
(West/South)
About 140,000 acres west/19,000 acres south
Maneuver would
start from the east on the
current MCAGCC base and the south
study area,
and the MEB battalions would
converge on an objective in the west
study
area.

No dud-producing ordnance use in 40,000
acres in
the south of the west
study area; this 40,000 acres would be open
for
public use when MEB training not
required.

Links to old Off-Road Adventures write-ups...

There's a couple of links to old articles that were written in the Off-Road Adventures Magazine regarding CV4W.

Here's the link when we were featured in the "Club Profile" section:

For some reason I can't find the link to the article that was written when we did the donations to Ranger Greg's Jeep...maybe someone else can find it?

Thought it might be kinda cool to have those links on our website somewhere!

Rockhard 4x4 Nice Job!

I wanted to share what Rockhard 4x4 has done for me, I thought that it was really nice.
I bent the lock pin on my swing gate a while back, Karen mentioned it to Drew at fourwheel parts and he said that it could be replaced. so I contacted Rockhard to find out the part number, they asked for my shipping address.
The next day I had a new pin at my door "FREE of charge".

I just thought it was great that a company would stand by their product like that.

Anyway Nice Job Rockhard, I am happy and my swing gates locks open once more:)

Karen likes it too:)
