Hello,
My name is Jessica DeLine.  I'm the race director for the Twin Peaks Ultra
Marathon that takes place in the Santa Ana Mountains on Feb 12th, 2011.
I'm looking for help from local 4x4 groups to help transport runners to
and from aid stations up on the mountain, as well as patrol the trails and
do any supply drops or pick up injured runners, etc.

San Bernardino, Calif., November 30, 2010 – The San Bernardino National Forest has moved into the new winter operating schedule for ranger stations, visitor centers and offices.

San Bernardino National Forest Headquarters

The office is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Arrowhead Ranger Station

The Ranger Station is open Sunday, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.    Closed on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Tussock Moth and Bark Beetle meeting set for December 8
Big Bear Civic Center 10:00 a.m.

The public is invited to a Douglas-fir tussock moth and bark beetle informational session at the Big Bear Civic Center on December 8.

U.S. Forest Service and CalFire entomologists are presenting information on the tussock moth infestation and a seasonal update on bark beetle activity in the Big Bear valley.    Entomologists and foresters will be providing information for residents that may have tree species susceptible to tussock moth such as Blue Spruce and Douglas-fir.

Weather: Clear, 55 Degrees

Work Performed:   Drove over to the Adopt A Trail shed at the ranger station and picked up a new club decal for our adopted trail sign. Some one had removed part of the existing decal from the sign located at the beginning of the trail. I installed the new decal. I then drove down our adopted trails 2N90, B, & C looking for trash and any areas which might need immediate attention such as removal of downed trees across the trails and areas which might need immediate anti erosion work. I was very pleased to see that there was no trash to pick up. I replaced a few mile marker stakes on 2N90 at mile points 1.236, 1.287, 1.304, 1.323 and 1.339 as these markers were hard to read.   Our trails are in good shape and it appears that they are being used quite often due to the amount of tire tracks in the dirt.

Total Man Hours:  12 Hours

Observations: When traveling on our adopted roads I came in contact with two jeeps and two Quads’
on 2N90 and 2N90B. Also made contact with a SUV at the junction of 2N01 and 2N02. People needed directions on how to get back to Big Bear Lake. I gave the people in the SUV a trail map of the area.

Join Jeepfrog Bob, Pollywog Linda, Ginger and the usual suspects at the Frog's Abode in Anaheim Hills for an evening social to celebrate the exciting adventures of this year's trek to Ouray, Colorado.  We've got lots of pictures!

Something I learned about Smog Check

I want to share something I learned the hard way last week. 

You do not want to disconnect your battery just before getting a smog check.  It resets the computer.  My Jeep failed because there wasn't enough history on the computer.  I was told I needed to drive 50-100 miles before it would pass for no engine codes. 

Just something to be aware of for those of us that work on our rigs and/or don't use it as a daily driver.

A small bug was fixed for the guest trek/gathering approval/denial.

The news main page has been revamped to show the news contents themselves on the page.  You can still go to the detail page to see the individual news item (ie from the homepage or emails), but if you want to see all the news items its nice and convenient from the main news page now!

Trek Report: Dishpan, Lake Arrowhead

Decided to beat the heat and pass on the Anza trip (looked fun tho!), and went up to Big Bear (75degress or so..very nice).  Met a few friends (4 jeeps total) up there and the decision was made to hit a trail in Arrowhead.  Didn't know what I was in for, figured just a scenic trail with great views and some fun spots...maybe even a chance to test out the new lockers....

As we hit the trailhead, there was a sign with some little black diamonds on it..didn't stop to ponder the significance of that...opps!  Then about 1/8th of a mile in, we hit our first big test!  Serious boulders, vertical climb...  Lots of spotting later we all made it.  That start of the trail was by far the hardest obstacle I have attempted!  Few stalls, but made it through without getting stuck.  Had the lockers on..but quickly realized having the front on while have to constantly change direction between boulders and steep embankments doesn't work!  Note to self..use fronts only when going in a straight line!

Pretty much the whole trail was vertical (up n down) and kept in low range.  I'm pretty sure there were 3 really tough spots..but all I can really remember is the first and LAST.

The last appears to be more of a dried up waterfall with sheer rock and boulders.  There was a ton of traffic backlog..some rhino's had gotten stuck, motorcycles flipping over...some real steel carnage!  There were really 3 sections to this obstacle, first a sheer rock face to get over, then crawling on top of boulders, and finally a tight switchback between the "cliff/hill' dropoff, a huge tree, and boulders.

Like the other hard obstacles..i went with rear lockers on (better safe than sorry), and would only use the front lockers as needed/per rock/rut.  Serious pucker factor but made it through, again a few stalls, but no damage, no reversing, not getting stuck!  That was by far the coup-de-grace of the trail, and way outa my league.

After that, there was one more cool obstacle where you went around a bend..and had to drive in a ditch/V so to speak... get too high on either side and you'd tip in.  Times like that I appreciate the wider stance of the JK!

Really an exciting trail, but honestly above my experience level.  More luck than competency... If I knew what I was getting into I probably would have decided to try it at some later date after I have a few more treks under my belt.

Asked our appointed trail boss what the name of it was...something called Dishpan he replied... when I got home I looked it up....expert black diamond...yikes!  I found this webpage about the trail itself:

A new feature for the video page has been added:  Comments.

The page has been redesigned a bit to allow for members (and guests) to post comments on the videos.  All the comments on the video will be listed at the bottom of the page as well!

This is using the YouTube direct comment system.. so not only can you post and view comments through the website, youtube users can see and post directly on youtube and share all the same info!

I may do the same for the photos page, but lets see how everyone likes this feature for videos first.

Its also using a bit of new tech for the website, ajax calls to post.  You will notice when you post that a little waiting logo will appear, and then a thank you message, all without reloading the page :-)

Final note:  Right now, both members AND guests can post comments, but I may need to limit or restrict what guests can post in the future...

Final Final note:  Your posted comment may take a while to display (say 10minutes) for Youtube to refresh the comments feed.... Ie next time you visit the video page for the video, it should show your comment.

I will be placing some photos in an album shortly. Sense I just returned home last night I am not able to make tonight’s meeting due to existing constraints and the fact that a week with nearly zero sleep has worn me into some sort of coughing garbage.

Lets start with the Big Bear Forest Fest: June 18-19-20 

Head up the hill Friday the 18th Jeep behind the motor home on the trailer and about 7 miles up the hill past the 210/330 we blew the trans. Wedged off the road under up hill coast with some quick thinking on into a clearing / turn-out. Unload the jeep off the trailer so I can travel up to where the cell worked. Made a bunch of calls to my friends at the fest plus Hamner Towing. At 5:30 pm Hamner shows with a big rig tow and took the motor home and car trailer away, kids and Debbie jumped in the Jeep with me and we went on up to Snow Valley, completed tech inspection, registered, visited a bit, then left for Mission Viejo to sleep and back in the morning. Obviously we had nothing to sleep in.

Sat the 19th - Up at 3:00 am which was tough sense we only just got home at 11:30pm. Grabbed the Pick-up and Deb drove the Jeep and we went to Corona to pick up the car trailer and a bunch more motor home stuff. Get up to BBFF at 6:00 am. Line up with Larry of Poison Spider and the rest of my JKO buddies and off to run Dishpan Springs. Some drama there but 25+ Jeeps right through forward and then back.

Great Steak Dinner that night, kids rock wall, live band, kids raffle, main raffle, sleep in a tent and it's cold. Sunday morning get up, skip the gold hill run and go home. Wife pretty much hates me :) kids are zombies.

Monday the 21st - I remember back a year ago a good buddy of mine gave me Chino Hills Transmission to discuss a driveline vibe in the motor home. Rick sent me to Wade (We all know wade) and wade was great. Now it was my turn to give Chino Hills Trans a chance to rebuild the trans. Has to be done by Friday at days end because I have this Rubicon deal, Sugar Pine camp ground, Well's making the trek, etc. So I did what any desperate Jeeper would do....I begged with money.

Friday June 25th - Motor home is ready. The failure was the front hub for first gear planet set. Sheared off. So now we have a nice Billet Front hub, which is a 6 planetary instead of 4, shift kit, $2700 later I am rolling. Time to crash pack. Friday was an up till 2:00 am deal...were ready.

Saturday June 26th - We leave at 8:00 am for the 550-mile trek to N. Lake Tahoe. That took a quick 14 hours. During this drive we received a call from Wells. Unfortunately were going up the 5 but decide to stay the first night on the trail Monday at Loon lake to give Wells Monday to get it fixed and up to loon which was do-able from Bishop.

Sunday - June 28th - Head from my Buddies Father in Laws place in Kings Beach down to Sugar Pine Camp Ground and check in. Sign a contract stating we would not leave anything out at night because the Bear problem is very real. Get a call from Wells and he's heading home in second gear. We feel bad for him. He was really looking forward to this deal.

Monday - June 28th - Make the trek down the 50 with the Jeeps loaded, right on Ice House Road, and up to Loon Lake. Stayed there Monday night anyway. That was an excellent choice. Fished, relaxed, camped, women had real toilets....LOL Wife still hates me but is a little happier with camping garbage (her words). :)

Tuesday 29th - Out an onto the Rubicon Loon Lake entrance at 8:00 am. Down the first granite slab, through the gate keeper, down slabs, up the other side on our way to the little Sluice for lunch and to watch the rock buggies play. Enter Walker hill - Remember we are loaded heavy on the roof racks and extra stress on the Jeeps - Mike breaks a rear hub (he has this Warn rear hub axle conversion kit which was there when he bought it) but no big he has a spare. After about an hour getting to a point we can jack the thing up, get the hub on, and ready to roll it now pushing 3:00 pm. So much for Buck Island for tonight.

Top of walker hill this new hub is creaking then bang Mike lost a rear Locker or actually broke an axle shaft in his 44. So were forced to unlock this hub and discover that with heavy jeeps, a peg leg was not going to get it done. Now it’s 6:00 pm and were driving out. Hit loon lake at dark thirty, exhausted (Gate keeper on a peg leg) I am near a fat mans death. We sit at the waters edge sobbing like school girls. Done.

We get Mike set and drive back to Sugar Pine.

Wednesday 30th - Mike's birthday...for a gift was leaving the families behind and were driving in the back way to the Con. All the way to Observation point, and look at Cadillac Hill. I'm feeling a little better. So basically I have been on 1/2 the trail.

Wed night - Bear issues, stuff torn apart, rangers running around with shot guns in full tatical allert. People screaming,  Fun stuff. The bears are officially out of control and the rangers know it. Wow! They can hardly keep up with the rubber bullets. By the way the Shotgun holds 6 rounds. The first three are rubber bullets. The second three are in case the rubber bullets don't get the bear on the move. Then ther is no more movement and a forklift is needed. The Browns are averaging near 600 lbs now. Very well fed. 

Fast forward to yesterday and the drive home. We have some boating stories as well but nearly sinking a boat is not what a Jeep club does so I will skip that. LOL.

Everything is now for sale (j/k). Make and offer. My Bad luck is up for bid first.  Lets start at I give you a $100. Takers?

Hi all,

I hope everyone had a fun and safe 4th of July Celebration.  July Club Meeting is on Tuesday, July 6th at 7:30 p.m. at Wind and Sea Restuarant in Dana Point (tomorrow).

A variety of changes were pushed last night.

• Homepage has a large overhaul.  The goal is to give a better snapshot of all the happenings on the website. 
  
• The events list has been moved to the top.  The date/time has been cleaned up, and when the Event is the current day some clear text, *** TODAY *** will be displayed.
  
• The random video/photo album has been rebuilt to show the latest of each!
• The news items will now show the last 6 with time or day info depending on how recent they are (that was done last week but forgot to mention it)
• A item has been added, Last Updated Rig.. Just a quick snapshot of what people are doing with their Rigs.
• Each section title is click-able which will take you to that section of the website (ie videos page)
• From time to time google services go offline, so now the homepage will not die when this happens, it just will not show certain sections that are not available from google.
  
• Photo page is using larger list icons.  It will also show the count and thumbnails of all the images below the slideshow (that was done last week but forgot to mention it)
• Video page is using larger list icons.  It will also show the # of views, description, tags, and time of the video below (that was done last week but forgot to mention it)
• Classifieds page is using larger list icons
• Classified product detail page has been revamped to function easier

After making the cool calendar style, I couldn't leave the Event/Trek system well enough alone! :-)

The Create/Edit event page has been revamped / reorganized a bit to make it easier to enter information.

The Event Detail page has some big layout cleanup.  Hopefully it looks much cleaner/better to you too! 

A new dynamic "Difficulty Gauge" has been created to help newer members/guests visualize how hard/easy the trek will be! 

Finally, the Trek information that Guests can see has been revised.  As we now have many guests requesting sign-up with that new feature from a few weeks ago, I thought it would be more helpful to show them some (NOT ALL) information.  You can check it out my looking at a trek as a logged in member, and then sign out and view it as a guest (if you happen to care :-) ).

Website Updates - new features!

Photo Upload.  Many of you have run into the 500kb max size limit problem.  The system has been updated to now accept up to a 5mb image, and it will automatically resize it for you!  Just note, if you upload 5mb images, it will take a while for the upload (especially if you do 5 to 10 at a time ~50mb!!)!  I still recommend you shrink them down before you upload, but at least now the main hassle is out of your way!

Calendar.  The calendar has a major overhaul.  There are now two modes to see events,  the previous "List Style", and the NEW "Calendar Style".  You can easily switch between the two modes on the calendar page with the links at the top!

New Info Page - Public Scales

A new info page has been added, Public Scales.  This page has the same basic premise as the coin car was page.  It lists local facilities that allow the weighting of your rig!  Took quite a bit of searching to find these, and I'm not entirely sure they are all still in business, but its a start!

Hey everyone,

I was looking through my notes to add some of the upcoming runs to the website since it is looking sparse, but I have no dates for new runs past this weekends Mojave Road run.  If you are planning on leading any of the upcoming runs, please start working out a date or have some ideas for the next meeting.  Obviously if your run is further out, the urgency is less.  Here is a list of what I have so far:

Website Updates - Guest Trek Enhancement

With many requests for the feature (both from members and guests alike), a large enhancement has been added to the Trek system:  Guest Signups.

Guests can now make a request to Join a Trek.  Simply fill out the required fields on the trek you wish to join and you will receive a pending request email.

The Trail Boss or other members signed up for the trek will receive an email as well and can Approve or Deny the request.

If approved, that guest will now be "active" for the trek, and they will receive a special url that will allow them to see if the full details of the trek (overriding the hide trek info for non-members functionality).  That special url must be used by the guest to see the complete trek info at any time.  It also gives the ability for the guest to remove themselves from the trek.

4wheel parts march madness

This weekend is the 4wheelparts March Madness Sale.  We are inviting clubs to come down and pay us a visit.  The Redondo Beach Store (my location) will have the RTI ramp out to play on and will be serving food and drinks as well as some big special pricing for club members. For every 6 vehicles a club brings, they will get a 100 dollar gift certificate to their club…if they bring 12, they will get a free 8000 lb winch.  I know it is a long way up here but you could also attend at our Santa Ana location.  Thank you for your continued support.
