Need HAM radio 4x4 volunteers needed

posted by OK

Hi,

I was asked to volunteer for the Chimera 100k/100 mile Trail Ultra marathon as communication support through my HAM radio club.  However, they also need operators that have 4x4s to get the volunteers and equipment to each aid station.

The race is this Saturday December 12.  Race details are at http://www.oldgoatrunners.com/old_goat_50_home_page_002.htm

The race starts on Saturday morning  the 12th of dec. it is a combination 100 kilometer and 100 mile trail run in the Santa ana mountains up and around Santiago Peak. Some of the runners will be out on the course for 36 straight hrs. The race director was hoping for 3 twelve hour shifts at 4 aid station locations. 1 shift is only about 8 hours. It's located at the foot of Silverado Trail (about 250 yards inside the gate) on Maple Springs
Truck Trail at the end of Silverado Canyon.   It will be manned from
about 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, It is the 38 mile point in the race and we
expect that the front runners will be there around 10:00 am. Im not sure how many volunteers we have yet. Im still getting e-mails from possible volunteers. Im going to copy more info for you from the race director about locations of the aid stations.

From the race director:

Top of Maple Springs and Bluejay...  After that Silverado (the
>> shortest duration) Trabuco Trail Head (the longest serving), then
>> Santiago and Trabuco Peaks....
>>
>> With the exception of Silverado all of the aid stations will be open
>> for nearly 36 hrs.  That's why we have scheduled three shifts at each
>> station...   In a perfect world there would be at least one HAM at
>> each station each shift.  We will feed and shelter everyone who wants
>> it.   The stations are 10X20 shelters with heaters (small) and grills
>> for cooking lite fair and heating water for coffee etc.
>>
>> We have 4X4 s at each station and a shuttle delivering personnel
>> through the evening...  The shuttle takes about 2 and a half hours
>> each way between Blue Jay and Maple Springs...   There is no
>> predicable transportation from Silverado up to Maple Springs though I
>> know there is going to be a Pizza Run to that location at 8 PM on
>> Saturday.
>>
>> Approxamately 100 runners will run the 62 mile course, and about 60
>> runners will do the 100 Mile race....  I anticipate about 30% of the
>> hundred mile field will drop at Blue Jay.   What this means is after
>> the 100k field passes, the runners will be widely spaced and there may
>> significants lulls between arrivals.  The HAMs will only be HAMs and
>> the volunteers will take care of the runners needs, and those
>> volunteers with HAM licenses 'may' assist if the situation permits.
